5 Ways To Achieve Maximalist Style At Home, With Abigail Ahern

As the interiors world develops more of a zeal for riotous design and a ‘more is more’ approach to decorating – more commonly known as maximalism – we were keen to get an insight into how to achieve this all-out look in our homes. We caught up with interior designer and author Abigail Ahern, who has just released a new book called Everything: A Maximalist Style Guide, who offered five simple ways to embrace the trend this season.

1. Swaddle your furniture

An essential part of decorating in a maximalist way – especially in the cooler months – is to swaddle sofas, chairs and beds in giant cushions and throws. This will achieve a downy, slouchy and super snuggly effect, whilst rejuvenating the soul and inspiring lounging – which is just what we need right now.

2. Add statement lighting

Turn the style dial right up with statement lights – every maximalist home needs an oversized pendant in their decorating arsenal. You’ll create spaces that solicit conversation and evoke immense personal pleasure.

3. Print clash

Overdose on patterns and embrace rugs, art, vases and books. There is an undeniable power in print; it’s like an herb or spice. It adds instant pizzazz.

4. Focus on the palette

Embrace a deeper palette; there is something so sumptuous about pigmented super-rich colours. It takes a bit of gumption and guile to pull off but it’s game changing.

5. Inject personality

Max things out by displaying objets d’art and anything you’ve gathered on your travels for an interior fueled with personality. Just remember to restrain the colour palette here, mix up the heights of your pieces and you’ll create a distinctive space full of character.
